Neurorehabilitation
This service is designed for people with acquired brain injury or other complex neurological conditions who would benefit from a short, intensive period of neurological rehabilitation from our specialist teams of consultants, doctors, nurses and therapists.
This pathway may also include admission to one of our one bedroomed step-down bungalows. These are separate one-bedroom apartments adjacent to the main building fitted with a kitchen, living area and wet room. The bungalows have easy access to the sensory garden and have their own parking spaces. These facilities provide support to individuals in preparation for discharge back to the community. The focus is on promoting functional daily living skills with support from the multidisciplinary team (MDT) professionals.
Examples of conditions treated:
- Traumatic brain injury
- Anoxic brain injury
- Subarachnoid haemorrhage
- Encephalitis or meningitis
- Spinal cord injury

Marillac Neurological Care Centre works closely with the NHS, Local Authority, Case Management Services, placement can also be privately funded.
Slow stream neurorehabilitation
This is a longer period of less intense rehabilitation. It is designed for people who need time to practise newly learned skills in a variety of everyday situations.
The focus is on promoting functional daily living skills with support from the MDT professionals.
Conditions treated at a slow pace:
- Traumatic brain injury
- Anoxic brain injury
- Subarachnoid haemorrhage
- Encephalitis or meningitis
- Complex stroke
- Brain tumour
- Spinal cord injury

Complex Nursing Care with Therapy – (spinal cord injury (SCI), complex disability management and patients in Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness (PDOC) Palliative Care and End of Life. (EOL)
The complex nursing care pathway with therapy (spinal cord injury (SCI), complex disability management and patients in Prolonged Disorder of consciousness) (PDOC) provides person -centred and holistic care that meets the needs of people who have physical and complex, neurological disabilities.
This pathway focuses on maintaining and enhancing care to promote independence, freedom of choice and quality of people’s lives. Encompassing Medical, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Psychology, Music Therapy and Pastoral Care.
Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Enhanced Maintenance Therapy (EMT)
Marillac’s SCI EMT pathway is delivered to patients who require enhanced maintenance of their current level of function, in relation to their Spinal Cord Injury.
There is a significant evidence-base promoting active therapeutic maintenance input for all patients with a SCI. Therefore, Marillac have established a dedicated pathway to ensure that all patients with a SCI are funded for a minimum of 1 mandatory session of physiotherapy per week.
The SCI EMT pathway includes an initial therapy assessment period, followed by MDT maintenance goal setting alongside the nursing team. This maintenance therapy will be facilitated by qualified therapists, in collaboration with the patient’s ward and relevant care staff.
SCI EMT input will vary according to the patient’s identified neurological impairments, and weekly therapy sessions may fluctuate to best meet the enhanced maintenance needs of the patient. Regular reports and MDT meetings are organised to ensure joint maintenance of the patient’s function.
(PDOC) Prologued Disorder of Consciousness Pathway
This pathway is recommended when patients require an extended period of assessment and monitoring on discharge from an acute setting and whilst in a PDOC state.
The PDOC pathway is delivered by the Neuro Therapies Team.
The intensity of assessment will vary according to the patient’s presentation, and weekly therapy sessions may fluctuate. Regular reports and MDT meetings are organised to ensure information sharing of the patient’s function, and any updated in levels of awareness.

End of Life (EOL) - Palliative Care
The Palliative Care Pathway at Marillac Neurological Care Centre involves a joint approach from the neurotherapies and nursing teams. The pathway aims to promote a patient’s quality of life by ensuring that there are aids in place to optimise independence, comfort, and function (i.e., environmental controls, communication aids and mobility aids etc).
This pathway is requested when patients require neurotherapeutic input as a means of ensuring comfort and independence whilst living with a terminal, progressive condition.
The Palliative Care Pathway will be facilitated by qualified therapists in collaboration with the patient’s ward and relevant care staff, and regular reports and MDT meetings will be organised as a means of reviewing and adapting input to suit the patient’s changing level of needs.
